Continuing on our storytelling journey, here is today’s stooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Once there grew a huge tree on the bank of the river. Some distance away was a forest. One day some monkeys came from the forest to quench their thirst in the river. The river had cool sweet water such that the monkeys had never tasted before.

Soon the news about the pleasant river spread throughout the forest. One by one, many animals came and settled around the river. The monkeys lived on the tree, the birds lived in the hollow of its branches, the rabbits settled on its foot, the deer and the peacock made their homes in the nearby bushes …. And they all started living in peace!

Days went by and life prospered around the river and the tree until one night a giant came from somewhere and entered into the river. Unaware of the giant, the animals carried on with their routines. But from that day, the number of animals started decreasing. Whoever went to drink water in the river never returned. The giant never showed himself to the animals. Eventually, he ate up all the animals in the surroundings.

One day, a monkey family came wandering from somewhere. It was a hot day and they were all very thirsty and tired. “Aha water!” cried the young ones, as they rushed to the river. The chief of the family was an old wise monkey. “No, children! Don’t go near the river,” he stopped them at once. The chief monkey surveyed the banks of the river. He could see the footprints of many animals going towards the river. But none of them were returning.

The clever old monkey uprooted a soft reed and pushed its one end into the water. He then asked a young monkey to climb up the tree and hold other end of the reed. Then he asked the young monkey to suck water through the hollow reed. Likewise all the monkeys quenched their thirst with sweet water. All the monkeys praised the intelligence of their chief.

Giant who was in the river waited for a long time and then finding no animals he came outside the water. But all the monkeys were sitting on the tree so they were safe.

HA! HA! HA!
